Loiter Point does not run a testing lab. We do not own a spectrophotometer, a power analyser, or a climate-controlled bench, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we do is read the labs that do run those instruments, cross-reference their numbers against each other, and translate the results into buying advice.

For this review that means: GSMArena's full review (published 6 March 2026) and spec sheet, which supplies every measured brightness, charging and benchmark figure quoted below; the EU energy label filings, which supply the endurance and cycle-life ratings; and published reviews from Digital Trends, Gizmodo, Amateur Photographer, Notebookcheck and droid-life for longer-term impressions. We also weigh aggregate owner sentiment — GSMArena's listing carries 1,445 user opinions with a 71% user rating, which is a middling score for a phone that reviewers broadly like, and that gap is itself informative.

Every number in this article is attributed inline to whoever produced it. Where sources disagree or evidence is thin, we say so rather than papering over it. One thing we specifically cannot vouch for first-hand: long-term camera processing behaviour and thermal sustain, which need months of hands-on use. Digital Trends' reviewer, who spent four months with the phone, is the closest thing to that datapoint we have.

Design and Build: You Will Not Notice the Difference

163.6 x 78.1 x 7.9 mm, 214 g. Against the S25 Ultra that is 0.3 mm thinner and 4 g lighter — differences you can measure but not feel. Samsung has settled into a shape and is refining decimal places.

The materials are top-tier: Gorilla Armor 2 on the front, which Corning rates at Mohs level 6 for scratch resistance, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the back, an aluminium frame, and IP68 sealing rated to 1.5 m for 30 minutes. The S Pen survives another generation, which remains the single clearest reason to choose an Ultra over anything else in the wider Android field — nobody else ships a silo'd stylus in a mainstream flagship.

droid-life's review singled out slimness and general polish; Amateur Photographer summarised the whole device as "a minor upgrade, but still class-leading." Both readings are correct simultaneously, and that tension runs through the entire product.

The Privacy Display: Real, Clever, and Genuinely Expensive

This is the feature Samsung built the marketing around, and it is the only truly new thing on the phone. It deserves the most words, because the trade-off is larger than the launch coverage suggested.

The good news first: it works. Flip it on and the viewing cone narrows sharply, which is exactly what you want on a plane seat, a train, or an open-plan desk. It can be scoped intelligently, too — you can restrict it to notifications, to password and PIN fields only, to specific apps, or trigger it via Routines. That granularity is better thought through than most first-generation Samsung features.

Now the cost. GSMArena's lab measured the panel in both states, and with Privacy Display enabled maximum brightness is halved in every single scenario:

A 329-nit manual ceiling is dim-phone territory. In direct sunlight — the exact scenario where a stranger is most likely to be reading over your shoulder — the privacy mode is fighting you. And there is a second penalty: because of how the effect is produced, pixel density visibly drops when it's active. GSMArena confirmed this under a digital microscope.

Nerd box: how the Narrow/Wide pixel trick works

This isn't a software dimming filter. Samsung built a hardware layer that splits the panel's subpixels into two populations: a "Narrow" group with a tight emission angle, and a "Wide" group that throws light broadly, the way a normal AMOLED does.

In normal use both groups fire and you get a conventional, bright, wide-viewing-angle screen. Switch Privacy Display on and the Wide group is dimmed or disabled outright. The narrow-emission pixels are all that's left, so off-axis viewers see very little — and you, head-on, are now looking at a screen driven by roughly half its light-emitting elements. That is the mechanical reason brightness halves and effective pixel density falls; GSMArena verified the changed subpixel pattern under a digital microscope.

There is a third setting, "Maximum Privacy Display," which crushes contrast on top of the dimming — blacks lift to grey. GSMArena's judgement is blunt: in standard privacy mode a determined onlooker can still roughly make out the screen at an angle, and only Maximum mode is genuinely private. Maximum mode is also the one that most badly degrades what you see.

There's a coverage limit as well: today Privacy Display works only in system apps and on the lock screen. Third-party app support is expected later, but "expected later" is not a feature you can buy. If your threat model is someone reading your Slack or your banking app on a commute, check whether that app is covered before you spend on this phone. Gizmodo's framing — that a more private screen "only goes so far" — is fair.

With Privacy Display switched off, the panel is essentially identical in quality to the S25 Ultra's, which is to say excellent: 6.9 inches, 1440x3120 at roughly 500 ppi, LTPO 120 Hz, HDR10+, a DX anti-reflective coating that meaningfully cuts glare. GSMArena flags three real weaknesses worth knowing: it is an 8-bit panel using FRC rather than true 10-bit, there is no Dolby Vision, and there is no high-frequency PWM dimming — that last one matters if you're among the minority sensitive to display flicker at low brightness.

Performance: Comfortably Beyond What Anyone Needs

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 on a 3 nm process, Adreno 840 graphics, 12 GB of RAM on the 256 GB and 512 GB configurations and 16 GB on the 1 TB. Storage is UFS 4.X and there is no card slot, so buy the capacity you need up front.

GSMArena's benchmark runs: AnTuTu v10 at 2,627,986, GeekBench 6 at 11,566, and 3DMark Wild Life Extreme at 7,744. These are among the highest numbers recorded on an Android phone, and they are also — practically speaking — irrelevant to most buyers. Every flagship in this price bracket is fast enough that the differentiators are battery, cameras and software support, not synthetic scores.

Battery and Charging: The Charger Is the Story

The battery is 5,000 mAh, unchanged from the S25 Ultra. GSMArena's Active Use Score came in at 16:23h, and their verdict is one we'd endorse: better than its predecessor and genuinely solid, but still behind Chinese rivals and Apple. The EU energy label rates the phone Class A with a 55:00h endurance rating and 1,200 charge cycles. Charging is where Samsung actually moved. The S26 Ultra takes 60W wired over standard USB Power Delivery with a 3A/20V PPS profile — explicitly not a proprietary standard. GSMArena measured 51% in 15 minutes, 84% in 30 minutes, and a full charge in 43 minutes. Note that Samsung itself only claimed 75% in 30 minutes, so the independent lab beat the manufacturer's own number, which is a rare and welcome direction for that error to run. A third-party 67W charger produced similar times. Draw sustained at 51–53W before tapering to around 40W, and never exceeded 3A — so you do not need a 5A cable.

Two caveats you should price in. Samsung's 60W charger is sold separately and ships without a cable, though the 3A cable in the phone box is sufficient. And wireless charging is 25W Qi 2.2 — but the phone has no built-in magnets. To hit that speed you need a magnetic case. Budget for one.

Cameras: Class-Leading, Barely Changed

The array is a 200 MP f/1.4 wide on a 1/1.3-inch sensor (23 mm, OIS), a 10 MP f/2.4 3x telephoto (67 mm), a 50 MP f/2.9 5x periscope (111 mm), and a 50 MP f/1.9 ultrawide covering 120 degrees. The selfie camera is 12 MP. Video tops out at 8K/24 and 30, with 4K at 30, 60 and 120, 10-bit HDR and HDR10+ capture.

Amateur Photographer's summary — "a minor upgrade, but still class-leading" — is the most useful sentence written about this camera system. The 10 MP 3x telephoto is the weak link on paper and has been carried forward largely unchanged for several generations now. The dual-telephoto arrangement remains the reason to pick an Ultra if you shoot at distance; nothing else gives you both a usable 3x and a strong 5x periscope. Speakers are a small, honest downgrade with a compensation. GSMArena measured -25.9 LUFS and rated the output "Very Good" — slightly quieter than the S25 Ultra, but with better-balanced tuning that's less vocal-heavy. Their view is that the iPhone 17 Pro Max still leads the category on audio.

Software and Support: The Strongest Argument Here

Android 16 with One UI 8.5, and up to seven major Android upgrades. That commitment is the single most under-discussed reason to buy this phone: a device you keep for six years amortises a $1,039 street price down to something reasonable. Samsung DeX is included for desktop-mode work, and the hardware slate is complete — ultrasonic under-display fingerprint reader, UWB, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0.

How It Compares

All figures below come from the same GSMArena test suite, so these are apples-to-apples rather than cross-publication guesswork.

Two things jump out. The S26 Ultra wins charging decisively — 84% in half an hour against 64–65% for both major rivals. And it loses manual brightness to all three comparison phones, with the Pixel 10 Pro XL producing the brightest auto figure in the set at 2,340 nits. Turn Privacy Display on and the S26 Ultra's 329-nit manual result falls off the bottom of this table entirely.

For wider context: GSMArena's suite also puts the vivo X300 Pro at 100% in 29 minutes with a 5,440 mAh cell and 2,113 nits manual, and the Xiaomi 17 Ultra at a 6,000 mAh battery, 72% in 30 minutes, 0:43h to full and a 3,674-nit peak. Samsung's charging win is over Apple and Google, not over the Chinese flagship field — which is exactly what GSMArena concluded about battery life too.

Who Should Buy It — and Who Shouldn't

Buy it if…

You're upgrading from an S23 Ultra or older. Two or more generations of gains land at once — chipset, charging, display coating, seven years of software support. This is the clearest yes in the entire product's audience.

You need the S Pen. There is no real competition. If you annotate, sketch or sign on your phone, the decision is already made.

You shoot at multiple focal lengths. The 3x plus 5x periscope combination remains the most flexible in the class.

You charge in short bursts. 51% in 15 minutes over plain USB-PD, with no proprietary brick, is a genuine quality-of-life change.

Skip it if…

You own an S25 Ultra. Same battery capacity, same panel quality with privacy off, 4 g lighter, and speakers that measure slightly quieter. You'd be buying faster charging and a privacy mode that halves your brightness. Keep the phone.

You bought it for Privacy Display specifically. Check first that the apps you care about are covered — right now it's system apps and the lock screen only. And accept that the mode most people would call genuinely private, Maximum, is also the one that most degrades the display.

Outdoor visibility is your top priority. The Pixel 10 Pro XL measured nearly twice the manual brightness in the same lab.

You're price-sensitive. Even at a discounted street price this is a four-figure phone. Our sub-$1,000 picks get you most of the way there for meaningfully less.

A note on timing

Be aware of where we are in the cycle. Galaxy S27 Pro, S27+ and S27 Ultra model numbers surfaced in IMEI databases in June 2026 — that doesn't mean a launch is imminent, but it confirms development is well underway. Separately, Honor is developing its own privacy display, and Samsung has offered the underlying technology to competitors, so this will not stay an exclusive feature for long. If Privacy Display is your main motivation, waiting a cycle may get you a better-implemented version with wider app support. If you need a phone now, the S26 Ultra at its current street price is a sound purchase.

Bottom Line

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is a superb phone and an unremarkable upgrade — both statements are true. GSMArena scored it 4.5 and Digital Trends' reviewer, four months in, said he "can't part with it." That's the experience of living with it: quietly excellent. But the evidence doesn't support the marketing. The one genuinely new feature carries a measured 50% brightness penalty, works in a limited set of apps, and is only fully private in the mode that most damages the viewing experience. The 71% user rating across 1,445 owner opinions on GSMArena hints that buyers have noticed the gap between promise and delivery.

Buy it because it's the most complete Android flagship you can own for six or seven years, because the S Pen has no rival, and because 84%-in-30-minutes over standard USB-PD is a real, daily improvement.
