The Short Version

How We Evaluate Camera Phones

Loiter Point does not run a lab. We do not own a colour chart, a light booth or an ISO 12233 target, and we are not going to imply otherwise. What we do is read the outlets that do own those things — DXOMARK, DPReview, GSMArena, Tom's Guide, Android Central — pull their published figures and their published complaints, and set them next to each other so you can see where independent measurement supports a claim and where the claim is doing the work alone.

Camera phones are the hardest category in consumer tech to write honestly about, because almost every headline number is a software number. Megapixel counts on a phone sensor are pixel-binned before you ever see an image. "100x zoom" is a crop and an upscale. Night modes are stacks of frames reconciled by a model. None of that is fraud — computational photography is genuinely why phone cameras got good — but it does mean the spec sheet has stopped describing the optics and started describing the marketing.

So the ranking below leans on four things, in this order:

  1. Published lab scores from a consistent protocol. Mostly DXOMARK, because it is the only outlet running one repeatable test suite across the entire market, which makes cross-phone comparison possible at all. Its weighting is not neutral — see below — but it is at least stable.
  2. Independent reviewer comparisons on real subjects. Lab charts do not tell you what a phone does with a backlit face or a dim restaurant. Head-to-head shootouts from named outlets do.
  3. Optical reach, separated from digital reach. We list what the lenses actually resolve. Everything past that is reconstruction, and we say so.
  4. Documented failure modes. A camera's worst behaviour matters more than its best. If a reputable outlet has caught a phone inventing detail, that goes in the guide.

Price does not affect the order, and neither does what a link pays. The most expensive phone here ranks second. The cheapest ranks fifth because the evidence puts it fifth. DXOMARK scored the Pixel 10 Pro XL at 163 points and ranked it fourth in the world, behind the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, the Oppo Find X8 Ultra and the Vivo X200 Ultra. Read that list again: not one of those three is sold through normal US retail. Strip out the phones an American buyer cannot actually purchase and the Pixel is the top of the leaderboard. That is the single most useful fact in this guide, and it is why this phone is ranked first.

The component scores explain the character of the camera, and they are more interesting than the headline. Photo came in at 165 and Video at 160. Underneath those, DXOMARK scored the main camera at 173 — its testing noted wide dynamic range, accurate white balance and natural colour rendering — while bokeh landed at 160 with reliable subject isolation but visible depth artifacts in fine detail such as hair, and the ultra-wide at 158.

The number that deserves your attention is the telephoto: 141, comfortably the weakest component on the sheet. DXOMARK's read is specific rather than damning — good detail at the native 5x, with detail and texture falling off through the medium-range zoom factors between roughly 3x and 5x where the phone is interpolating between two lenses. So 5x optical is real reach and it holds together at 5x. It is the ground in between that is soft. If you shoot a lot at 2–4x, that is a genuine reason to look at the Samsung below, which has a dedicated 3x lens covering exactly that gap.

Independent reviewers running the Pixel against the iPhone 16 Pro found it took the low-light comparison, with sharper focus and better colour. The interesting structural point is that DXOMARK observed meaningful improvements over the Pixel 9 Pro XL despite largely carried-over camera modules — the gain came from the Tensor G5 processing stack, not new glass. That is the whole Pixel thesis stated in one sentence, and it is also why the phone is so forgiving. You point it at something and it is right. No mode-hunting, no manual intervention.

The caution is the zoom marketing, and it is a serious one. See the nerd box directly below before you buy this phone on the strength of its 100x number.

Nerd box · what DPReview found inside Pro Res Zoom

Google's Pro Res Zoom is the marquee camera feature of the Pixel 10 Pro generation, and DPReview tested it directly. Their findings deserve to be read before you treat any 100x sample image as a photograph.

At higher zoom levels, DPReview reported classic generative-AI failure: misshapen animals and missing body parts. The further you crop, the less real image data the model has, and the more of the frame it fills in from priors rather than from light that hit the sensor. Their summary is that images processed with Pro Res Zoom felt less like photographs and more like graphics, because so much of the visible detail is generated rather than captured.

Text is where it fails most legibly. DPReview found that where text was already fairly readable in the unprocessed crop, Pro Res Zoom kept it readable — but where the text was hard to read to begin with, the processing did not help. Generative models are notoriously bad at rendering glyphs, and what you get back is characters that look like words at a glance and are not the words on the sign. If you are photographing a street sign, a licence plate, a menu or a document at range, the output can be confidently, legibly wrong.

This is not a reason to skip the Pixel. At and around its native 5x optical reach it is excellent, and DXOMARK's detail and noise findings back that up. It is a reason to understand what the top of the zoom range is: a reconstruction, offered as a photograph. DXOMARK placed the iPhone 17 Pro at 168 points, inside its global top six and above every Samsung flagship on the board. On a pure lab score it beats the Pixel. We still rank it second, for one reason: the Pixel is the better phone for the way most people take pictures, and the iPhone is the better phone for the way a smaller number of people take video. If you are in that smaller number, invert this list and buy the iPhone.

The triple 48MP array is the most coherent lens set in the category — three sensors of matched resolution means switching focal lengths does not produce the jarring quality drop you get on phones with a token 12MP ultrawide bolted on. Apple quotes 4x and 8x optical, which is real reach in both directions, plus digital extension to 40x that is subject to the same reconstruction caveat as everything else in this guide. TechRadar and Tom's Guide have both named it the best all-round camera phone available, and multiple outlets single it out as the strongest choice for professional video work.

What the score does not capture is the workflow. The reason working videographers keep landing on iPhones is not that the sensor is uniquely good — it is the codec support, the colour consistency across lenses, the log capture pipeline, and a third-party app ecosystem that has had years more attention than Android's equivalent. That is a real advantage and it is not something a lab chart measures.

Here is the tension, printed openly rather than smoothed over. The Galaxy S26 Ultra has the most camera hardware of anything in this guide: four rear lenses, a 200MP f/1.4 main sensor, a dedicated 3x telephoto and a 50MP 5x periscope built around Samsung's new ALoP — All Lens On Prism — mechanism. On paper it is the most versatile phone camera you can buy at US retail, and at $949.99 it is also the cheapest flagship on this page.

And DXOMARK ranked it 18th in the world with 157 points, as Forbes reported in March 2026. Not 4th. Not 6th. Eighteenth, tied with devices including the two-year-old iPhone 16 Pro, behind the iPhone 17 Pro's 168, behind the Pixel 10 Pro XL's 163, and behind even the iPhone 16 Pro Max. It is a genuine improvement on the S25 Ultra's 151 — DXOMARK's testing specifically credited better skin-tone accuracy and texture rendering — but the improvement lands it mid-table, not at the top.

Both things are true and neither cancels the other. If your photography is defined by reach — sports from the stands, wildlife, stage lighting from row P — the S26 Ultra gives you more usable optical range than anything else here, and reach is a hardware problem that processing cannot fully solve. If your photography is defined by getting the everyday shot right, DXOMARK's ranking says two other phones on this page do it better. DXOMARK also flagged autofocus problems in low light and under difficult HDR conditions, and found low-light performance still trailing both iPhone Pro models in photo and video.

On the 100x figure: treat it the way we treat every number like it. Optical reach tops out at the 5x periscope. Everything from there to 100x is crop and upscale, the same class of claim as Nothing's "60x ultra zoom," and the same generative-reconstruction caution DPReview raised about the Pixel applies with equal force.

The S26 Ultra result confuses people, so it is worth unpacking what a DXOMARK overall score actually rewards.

It is a composite. Photo, video, portrait, zoom, bokeh and more get folded into one number, and video carries substantial weight. A phone can hold a genuine hardware advantage in one sub-test and still finish mid-table if it gives back points across several others. Samsung's low-light autofocus and low-light video are the drags DXOMARK identified; four lenses do not compensate for a focus system hunting in a dim room, because a perfectly framed 5x shot that misses focus scores zero regardless of how it was framed.

There is a second effect. Sensor size and lens count are hardware problems; exposure, white balance, noise reduction and tone mapping are processing problems, and processing is where Google and Apple have concentrated for years. The Pixel 10 Pro XL improved on its predecessor with substantially carried-over camera modules — the gain came from the Tensor G5 pipeline. Samsung shipped new optics and gained six points. That is the shape of the modern market: the sensor sets the ceiling, the processing decides how close you get to it.

The practical takeaway is that one composite number cannot answer "which phone is better for what I shoot." Read the sub-scores. If you shoot long, Samsung's reach is real. If you shoot at dusk, the ranking is telling you something you should listen to.

The Pixel 9a is the clearest demonstration in the market that phone photography stopped being a hardware contest. It has one useful rear camera, a 48MP main, and no telephoto at all. It is widely reported as the strongest camera you can buy under $500, and reviewers single out low light in particular — the condition where a small budget sensor should collapse and where Google's stacking and tone mapping instead pull out a usable frame.

What you are buying is Google's processing pipeline in a $499 body. What you are giving up is reach: with no telephoto, anything past the main lens is a crop, and a crop from a mid-range sensor degrades quickly. If a meaningful share of your photography happens more than a few metres away, no amount of computational cleverness fixes that, and you should either stretch to the Pixel 10 Pro or accept the limitation deliberately.

For everything else — people, food, pets, travel snapshots, the entire actual use case of a phone camera — this is the value pick in the category and it is not close. The A56 is the pick for someone who would rather have three lenses that are fine than one lens that is excellent. Where the Pixel 9a gives you a single main camera, the A56 adds a 12MP ultrawide and a 5MP macro, and optical image stabilisation on the 50MP main is a genuine asset for handheld shooting in dim conditions. If you actually use ultrawide — landscapes, interiors, group shots in tight rooms — that is a capability the 9a simply does not have.

The trade is low light, and it goes the other way. Reviewer consensus puts the A56 behind the Pixel 9a when the light drops, which is the condition that separates good budget cameras from adequate ones. Ranked purely on image quality it finishes below the 9a. Ranked on how many kinds of picture you can take, it finishes above. We put it fifth because this is a camera guide and image quality is the axis.

A note on buying this one: Amazon carries a large number of import and grey-market phone listings, and the A56 in particular shows up in international variants that do not come with US manufacturer warranty coverage. We have not cited DXOMARK scores for the Pixel 9a or Galaxy A56 because we are not confident in a figure for them; their placement rests on reviewer consensus and is labelled as such.

What We'd Skip

Buying a flagship for its biggest zoom number. This is the single most common camera-phone mistake and every manufacturer in this guide encourages it. 100x Space Zoom, 100x Pro Res Zoom, 40x digital — these are crops fed through upscalers, and at the top of the range the upscaler is generating detail rather than resolving it. Buy on optical reach: 5x on the Pixel and the Samsung periscope, 4x and 8x on the iPhone. Those are real.

The megapixel argument. The Galaxy S26 Ultra has a 200MP main sensor and the fourth-highest score on this page. The Pixel 10 Pro XL has 50MP and ranks first. Pixel-binning means you are not capturing 200 million discrete points of real detail regardless of what the sensor advertises, and the processing stack matters more than the count. If megapixels decided outcomes the leaderboard would look very different.

Phones we cannot verify a lab result for. There are capable cameras in this market that no independent lab has published a consistent score for. That absence is information: phones that test well tend to get their numbers quoted widely. We would rather recommend five phones with published evidence than pad the list.

Assuming a phone replaces a camera. Every phone here is remarkable for what it is. None of them resolves detail at range the way an actual telephoto lens does, and the further you push the zoom the more of the image is inference. Where Our Evidence Is Thin

Three disclosures, because the alternative is pretending.

First, the global ranking and the US buying decision are different questions, and we have quietly answered the second one. DXOMARK's leaderboard is topped by the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra at 175, the Vivo X300 Pro at 171 and the Oppo Find X8 Ultra — none of which are sold through normal US retail channels. When we call the Pixel 10 Pro XL the best camera phone you can buy, that "you can buy" is doing real work. On a pure global-quality basis it is fourth, and on some newer readings of the board it has since been displaced further. We rank on availability because you are reading a buying guide, but that is an editorial choice and you should know we made it.

Second, DXOMARK is one lab with one protocol. It is the best cross-market comparison tool available and we lean on it heavily, but its overall score is a composite that weights video substantially, and a phone's ordinal rank can move by several places on sub-scores that may be irrelevant to how you shoot. It is also the case that a lab test on a colour chart and a difficult real-world frame are not the same thing. Where reviewer findings diverge from the lab — the Pixel beating the iPhone 16 Pro in low light, say — we have printed both rather than picking a winner.

Third, prices move constantly and we are not a price tracker. The figures here are what we could verify at the time of writing: roughly $999.95 for the Pixel 10 Pro XL, $1,199 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, $949.99 for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, around $499 for the Pixel 9a, and a Galaxy A56 street range of roughly $385 to $500 anchored on a $384.99 Amazon low that 9to5Toys reported in April 2026. Flagship discounting is aggressive and seasonal. Treat the retailer's live listing as authoritative over anything in this article, and check that the seller is offering a US-warranty unit rather than a grey-market import.

Bottom Line

Buy the Pixel 10 Pro XL. On published lab evidence it is the best camera phone a US buyer can actually purchase at retail, its photo and portrait sub-scores are the strongest here, and it asks less of you than anything else on this page — you point it and it is right. Just know what the top of its zoom range really is.

If you shoot video professionally, take the iPhone 17 Pro Max and accept the $1,199. If your photography lives at the long end and you want four lenses for the cheapest flagship price here, take the Galaxy S26 Ultra — with your eyes open about that 157-point, 18th-place score. If $500 is the ceiling and image quality is what matters, the Pixel 9a is the pick and the low-light gap over its rivals is the reason. And if you would rather have an ultrawide than the best possible single lens, the Galaxy A56 5G at street price gives you more ways to take a picture — check the seller for US warranty before you buy.
