How We Evaluate iPhones

Loiter Point does not run a lab. We do not own a light meter, a battery-drain rig, or a climate-controlled bench, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we do is synthesize measurements that other people published under a stated methodology, cross-check them against each other, and weigh them against verified owner reports from long-running forum and subreddit threads where the same complaint or the same praise shows up repeatedly across hundreds of devices.

That means three rules govern every number on this page. First, if a figure came from a test, we name the outlet and the test — Tom's Guide's continuous web-browsing run over 5G at 150 nits is a different thing from GSMArena's composite battery routine, and conflating them produces nonsense. Second, anything in our spec grids marked est. real-world is a range derived from those published results and owner accounts, not something we clocked ourselves. Third, when the evidence conflicts, we say so in the body text rather than picking the flattering number.

The 2026 iPhone battery data is a live example of rule three. Tom's Guide's browsing test, The Tech Chap's continuous YouTube playback test, GSMArena's lab routine and Mrwhosetheboss's mixed-use logging all produce different absolute hours for the same phones — YouTube playback on the base iPhone 17 came in at 6h55m, browsing at 12h47m, GSMArena's routine at around fifteen hours, and mixed real-world use at 10h28m. All four can be correct simultaneously; they are measuring different loads. What they agree on is the ordering, and ordering is what a buyer actually needs. Verdict17h54m on Tom's Guide's browsing test is the longest result of the lineup by more than two hours, and TechRadar's assessment lines up: the Pro Max leads on battery. The 8x optical-quality zoom at 200mm equivalent is the longest telephoto Apple has shipped, riding a sensor 56% larger than the previous generation. Add the vapor chamber, which matters if you shoot 4K for extended stretches or game. It was the best-selling model of the line in 2025 and remains top-three in 2026. Nerd box: why the Pro and Pro Max shoot identical photos

Phone makers usually differentiate their big model with a better camera — a longer lens, a bigger sensor, sometimes an extra one. Apple did that for several generations and then stopped. In the 17 generation, the Pro and Pro Max carry the same sensor stack and the same tetraprism telephoto module, and the tetraprism is the reason the smaller body can keep up.

A conventional telephoto needs physical distance between the lens and the sensor, which is why long focal lengths mean long lenses. A tetraprism folds the light path against itself four times inside the module, so a 200mm-equivalent focal length fits inside a chassis a few millimetres deep. Because the folding happens in the module rather than the phone body, once Apple engineered it to fit the 6.3-inch Pro, there was nothing left for the 6.9-inch Pro Max to gain — the module is already as long as the optics require.

The practical consequence is that the camera has been removed from the Pro-versus-Pro-Max decision entirely. What the larger body still buys is volume, and volume goes to the battery. That is what the roughly two-and-a-half-hour gap on Tom's Guide's browsing test represents: the same silicon and the same optics, running off a bigger cell. Note that "optical-quality" is Apple's phrasing for the 8x mode, and it does involve sensor cropping rather than a dedicated 200mm lens element — worth knowing before you weight 8x heavily in your decision.

VerdictThe 17e is the first budget iPhone in a while that doesn't feel like it was assembled from last year's parts bin. It ships the full A19 with a 16-core Neural Engine, meaning it runs the same on-device AI workloads as the $799 model, and it restores MagSafe, which the previous e-model omitted and which owners complained about consistently. Ceramic Shield 2 and a 48MP main camera round it out. LTT Labs published performance and power testing on it in March 2026 and that remains the most rigorous public data on the device — it is the source to check if you want silicon-level numbers rather than our summary. We rank it fourth rather than higher because the independent battery and camera data on it is still thinner than on the flagship models, and we are not going to rank a phone on a spec sheet.

VerdictThe Air is an impressive object and a hard recommendation. It finishes last on both independent battery tests we have numbers for — 12h02m browsing on Tom's Guide, 6h43m of continuous video per The Tech Chap — and it costs $50 more than the base iPhone 17, which beats it on both. That is the whole argument. There is a real buyer for this phone: someone who carries it in a shirt pocket all day, charges at a desk, and genuinely notices the difference between 5.6mm and 8mm. If that is you, buy it without guilt. If you are buying it because it looks good in photographs, buy the 17 and put the $50 toward a case.

"Not published" means we could not find a result from that outlet for that model — it is not an implied score. GSMArena's own battery routine returns roughly fifteen hours for the base iPhone 17, materially above Tom's Guide's 12h47m for the same phone, which is a useful reminder of how much methodology drives the headline number.

Bottom Line

Buy the iPhone 17. It is $799, it has ProMotion and 256GB, and the market voted for it in 2026 by making it the best-selling model of the generation over the previously dominant Pro Max. The one thing it does not do well is endure, and TechRadar's position — that it trails its Android competition on battery — is the caveat you should weigh against your own charging habits rather than against a number on a chart.

If endurance is the thing you actually care about, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is the unambiguous answer at $1,199 — 17h54m on Tom's Guide's browsing run, well ahead of everything else Apple sells, plus the longest telephoto in the lineup. The iPhone 17 Pro at $1,099 gets you every bit of that camera in a 6.3-inch body, and the trade is battery and screen size, not image quality.

At the ends of the range: the iPhone 17e at $599 is the value pick and the first budget iPhone in a while with a genuine multi-year runway, held back in our ranking only by how little independent data exists on it so far. The iPhone Air at $849 is last because it finishes last on every battery test we could find while costing more than the phone that beats it. Thinness is a real preference and we are not going to tell you it isn't — just go in knowing exactly what it costs.

One closing note on the numbers above: four reputable outlets produced four different battery figures for the same phones, and the spread is wide enough that quoting any single one as "the" battery life would be misleading. We have named the source and the test for every figure so you can weigh them yourself. Where a cell says "not published," we left it empty rather than filling it with a guess.
