The 2022 Apple TV 4K is still the most polished streaming box on the market. It is also, right now, one of the worst-value things you can put in an Amazon cart — no first-party buy box, resellers above Apple's own MSRP, and a rumored successor circling.
There are two separate problems here and it matters that they are separate, because only one of them might go away.
The first is Apple's. In June 2026 Apple raised Apple TV 4K pricing; the 64GB Wi-Fi config now lists at $199 and the 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet config at $249. That is hardware from 2022 getting more expensive in 2026, which is an unusual direction of travel for a four-year-old streaming box.
The second is Amazon's. As of 20 July 2026, neither current Apple TV 4K configuration has an Amazon-sold buy box. The 128GB listing shows "$329.00 (3 new offers)" and the 64GB shows "$240.83 (3 used & new offers)" — both from marketplace sellers, both above Apple's own list price, and Amazon itself appends a "High price" flag to each listing. Paying $329 for a $249 box because it was convenient is how you lose $80 to a habit.
None of this is a criticism of the hardware. The A15 Bionic box is genuinely excellent, and the sections below treat it as such. It is a criticism of buying it, here, today.
Loiter Point does not run a lab and does not conduct its own hardware testing. We do not have units on a bench, and we will not pretend otherwise.
What we do is synthesise: published independent testing from outlets that do run labs, manufacturer-published specifications, and verified owner reports drawn from ratings and review volume at scale. On top of that we check live retail conditions ourselves — buy box status, seller mix, asking price versus MSRP, and retailer price flags — because for a mature product like this one, where and what you pay is usually the deciding variable, not the silicon.
In the spec grids below, "Rated / published" is the manufacturer's own claim. "Est. real-world" is either a reported figure from independent coverage and owner feedback, or a plain factual observation about the product and its market. It is never a measurement by us. Where we do not have credible evidence for a number, we write a qualitative note instead of inventing a figure. Rumours are labelled as rumours every single time.
If you want the Apple experience and you are buying on Amazon, this is the version that makes arithmetic sense. It is the full-fat 128GB config — Gigabit Ethernet, Thread border router, A15 Bionic — routed around the reseller markup sitting on the new listings. Renewed stock pricing moves, so we are not quoting a number; open the listing and compare it against Apple's $249 before you commit.

For roughly a third of what Amazon's resellers want for an Apple TV, the Roku Ultra covers the same format checklist: 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, and a rechargeable Voice Remote Pro with backlit buttons. It is not as fast or as smooth as the A15 box and its interface is more ad-forward, but the honest question is whether that gap is worth $250. For most households it is not. The volume seller, and for good reason. Wi-Fi 6E, AI-powered Fire TV Search, Alexa+, and a form factor that disappears behind the panel. If your alternative is spending $329 on a marked-up Apple TV, this is the sensible floor. It is the weakest of the five on interface cleanliness — Amazon's home screen is a storefront — but 80,000-plus ratings at 4.6 stars is not a fluke.

This is the best streaming box in the review and the worst purchase on the page. The hardware earns its 4.7 stars: A15 Bionic, Apple's claimed up-to-50% CPU and 30% GPU uplift over the 2nd gen, 4K high frame rate HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, Gigabit Ethernet, and the Thread border router. The listing does not: there is no Amazon-sold offer, three marketplace sellers are asking $329 against Apple's $249 list, and Amazon has stamped "High price" on it. Buy this configuration direct from Apple, or buy the renewed unit above.

The worst value on the page, and the easiest call. At $240.83 you are paying $41.83 over Apple's $199 list for a config that drops both Ethernet and — more importantly — the Thread radio. You are within $8 of the 128GB model's own MSRP while getting materially less hardware. Amazon flags this one "High price" too. If you specifically want the 64GB Wi-Fi model, buy it from Apple.

Apple markets the two Apple TV 4K configs on capacity — 64GB versus 128GB — which is the least interesting difference between them. Almost nobody fills 64GB with a streaming box. The actual split is that the 128GB model carries Gigabit Ethernet and a Thread radio, and the 64GB model carries neither.
Thread is a low-power mesh networking protocol built for smart-home accessories: door sensors, locks, plugs, blinds, the small battery-powered things that would drain themselves dead trying to hold a Wi-Fi connection. Thread devices talk to each other in a mesh, and every mains-powered Thread device extends that mesh further into the house. But a Thread mesh cannot reach your phone or the internet on its own — it needs a border router, a device that sits on both the Thread mesh and your normal IP network and translates between them.
That is what the 128GB Apple TV 4K is doing. It is a permanently powered, permanently on, hardwired-if-you-want-it border router for your Matter and HomeKit accessories, and it also acts as a HomeKit hub. Practically, that means Thread accessories respond faster and more reliably, automations still fire when your phone is off the network, and the mesh has a stable anchor point instead of depending on whatever else you happened to buy.
If you own or plan to own Thread-based Matter accessories, this is not a nice-to-have — it is the whole reason to choose that configuration, and it is why the 64GB model at $240.83 is such a poor deal. You are paying nearly 128GB money to give up the radio that makes the box worth having.

Separate from the rumour mill, one published editorial position is worth knowing: MacRumors' public buyer's guide currently carries a "Don't Buy — Updates Coming" status for Apple TV. That is MacRumors' own recommendation, not ours, but it lines up with what the retail picture already suggests.
Our read: waiting costs you nothing if your current setup works. Buying the new 128GB model at $329 today means paying an $80 reseller premium for hardware that may be superseded within two months of a rumoured launch window. If you need a box now — a dead player, a new TV, a moving box — take the renewed unit, take the Roku, or buy from Apple direct at list. Do not pay the markup.
The 3rd-generation Apple TV 4K remains, on the merits, the best streaming box available: the fastest interface, complete HDR and Atmos format coverage, an ad-free home screen, the best remote in the category, and — in the 128GB config — a Thread border router that quietly does real work for a Matter or HomeKit house. Four years on, the A15 Bionic still has nothing to prove. The 4.7-star average across 3,300 ratings is earned.
But a review that stops at the hardware is only half a review. Right now, on Amazon, both new configurations are sold exclusively by third parties at prices above Apple's own June 2026 list — $329 against $249, and $240.83 against $199 — with Amazon flagging both listings "High price." No first-party buy box, no discount, no reason.
So the honest advice is four options, none of which is "buy new on Amazon today." Buy the renewed 128GB unit and keep the Thread radio. Buy direct from Apple and pay list instead of markup. Buy the Roku Ultra at $81.95 or a Fire TV Stick 4K Max and put the difference somewhere useful. Or wait out the rumoured — and it is only rumoured — September 2026 window.
